“How I Went From What I Called “Reasonable Shape” To Losing So Much Weight I Became My Tailor’s Customer Of The Year“
How AP Lost Over 7KG and 7.2% Body Fat With The Help Of The Team At CrossFit Ignite
Several years ago on an impulse I wandered into Ignite, PJ impressed me with his earnest manner and I signed my life away on the spot. I staggered into a local cafe reeling from the fact that I had just committed myself to paying almost triple what my prior gym membership cost me.
I didn’t know it at the time but along with wooing my girlfriend Citra, these were the two smartest decisions I made in 2009.
I considered myself in reasonable shape at the time, however PJ brought me back to reality when I stepped into his office for a thorough poke and a prod where he diplomatically informed me that I had some work to do.
Within a couple of weeks I had crossed paths will all of the members of staff and they all addressed me by my name! This one gesture alone spoke volumes to me.
I am still today in awe of the depth of knowledge and professionalism at my disposal amongst the staff at Ignite, each brings their own area of expertise to the team which together blends to deliver an unparalleled service that I have never encountered anywhere else before.
“The Workshops I’ve Done Have Been As Valuable, If Not More So, Than The Training Itself”
In my first year at Ignite I participated in the ’4 Week Intensive’ program that was invaluable at re-educating me on nutrition and getting the most out of my training.
There is no doubt that the knowledge gleaned and the behaviours I developed as a result of these workshops has been as valuable, if not more so, than the training itself.
From Out Of Shape To CrossFit Games Open
I took the first steps on this path one and a half years ago, and have amazed myself at how much I’ve changed and developed during that time.
This all came to a head recently with my participation in the CrossFit Open as a member of the Ignite team. The CrossFit Games Open Qualifiers is a five week, worldwide competition in the sport of fitness. There is one workout per week for five weeks and athletes compete to qualify for the CrossFit Games.
The workouts are varied and no one knows what they will be from week to week until they’re announced.
I am immensely proud of the fact that I didn’t have to scale a single workout during the Open.
I learnt humility and perseverance when faced with bumbling my way through two rounds of 30 double-unders one at a time in front of not only my peers but with mentor Darren as my judge. I experienced the giddy exhilaration of performing a workout well and the disappointment of finishing below my expectations in others.
Participating in the open was immensely rewarding and has given me a great overview of my strengths and weaknesses and I now have a lengthy to do list in my folder to work on over the coming months.
From Out Of Shape To CrossFit Games Open
My CrossFit journey hasn’t all been sunshine and rainbows.
I have a matching pair of ugly scars on my shins form a slip on a box jump during a WOD months ago, I’ve had disappointing weigh in results, skills have been frustratingly difficult to acquire at times where others have come easily and I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve torn my hands from training. Every time though, there is ample reward to savour at the end when pushing through these barriers:
Reclaiming a waist girth not seen since high school has seen me become customer of the year with my tailor.
In my youth I could manage a bench press of 60kg (just), recently I punched out 95kg and they haven’t even featured in my program!
I’ve dropped 7.8kg and 7.2 percentage points of body fat.
I love being able to ski on and off-piste all over a mountain all day with ease for a week without any prior preparation.
I have surprised myself with achievements and self learning’s at Ignite and now seek ways I can apply these in other areas of my life.
All of this has only been possible with the fabulous service offered by CrossFit Ignite Sydney.
I owe a huge thank you to each of the trainers – whom have provided encouragement, guidance, pushed me further and dealt with my hissy fits with aplomb. A special mention to Darren for steering the good ship Ignite with a steady hand and inspiring me along this pilgrimage.
